Cercyonis pegala occurs in southern Canada and throughout most of the continental United States. It inhabits open woodlands, wet meadows, prairies, old fields, pastures, and salt marshes. A dark-brown variable butterfly with two eyespots on the forewing, and some or no eyespots on the hindwing. A large yellow patch on the forewing may be present or absent. Wingspan 38-76 mm. Adult C. pegala feeds on nectar, tree sap, and rotting fruit, and the larva on various grasses (Poaceae). This species flies from late May to October; one brood a year.
